Thank you to those who attended our 10 Year Anniversary CELEBRATION OF GENEROSITY FUNDRAISING EVENT on October 20, 2023

Thank you to MadisonChristians.com for the wonderful article they published about the event:

“It’s truly beautiful to see what God is doing in this city,” said Lighthouse Church pastor Marcio Sierra, the keynote speaker at the Madison Christian Giving Fund (MCGF) Tenth Anniversary Celebration of Generosity. The celebration was held Friday, October 20, 2023 in the Micah Center at High Point Church.

As a pastor, Sierra is used to seeing God at work in his congregation, and perhaps in the congregations of other pastors that he knows. But he said he got a greater perspective through his involvement with MCGF.

His involvement has been as a grant recipient for Lighthouse Church and School, but also as a volunteer who helped evaluate grant applications for a number of years. “The most beautiful part of this is learning about all of these organizations, learning about these ministries that are active in Madison,” he said.

Over the past decade, MCGF has channeled over $1 million to a growing number of Christian organizations that are not eligible for funding from other local sources due to their Christian allegiance. “We are about as low overhead as you can get,” said attorney Tom Hoffner, one of the founders of MCGF. “Whatever comes in goes out.”

This year MCGF has received grant applications from 54 ministries that are working in the local area. That’s a significant increase over the 40-application average of the most recent years; 20 are from organizations that are applying for the first time. To fund all of the applications will take almost $400,000.

Sierra based his talk on Jeremiah 29:7 where God tells the exiles in Babylon to “seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you.” Sierra said he knows that many churches pray for the city of Madison, but it’s important to do more than pray.

“God is calling us to be invested in Madison,” Sierra said. “We can invest in an organization like MCGF that invests in organizations that spread the gospel.”

Up until MCGF got started, Sierra said the only alternative funding source for his church and Christian school were car washes and tamale sales. Not that there weren’t people who wanted to financially support the work but only if they downplayed their Christian faith. “They loved what we were doing but they couldn’t give to us because we were religious,” he said.

With the help of MCGF, Lighthouse Christian school has flourished. Sierra noted that in the last year 22 students were baptized in Lighthouse chapel services. He said more students than that were baptized, but they were in the home churches of those other students.

These 22 came to Lighthouse with no church background, their parents may not have been Christian. “They’re telling their parents about Jesus,” he said.

Celebration of Generosity 2022

Watch video clips of the night through links below:

The Madison Christian Giving Fund Celebration of Generosity event, held on Friday, October 7, 2022, was a Spirit filled evening. Our Ministry Partners work so hard every single day, fulfilling the call God puts on their hearts. The celebration was intended to show appreciation for the Ministry Partners, to acknowledge their sacrifice, and to encourage them to continue their important missions. We also were happy to hear some of the success stories from our Ministry Partners.

The event was also a way to recognize and thank our wonderful donors who understand the importance of supporting those who answer God’s call.

In addition to uplifting music from members of the Christ Church Madison Worship Team, we are grateful for the encouraging and interesting talk from Dave Bechtold as he shared the importance of listening to God’s calling. Dave reminded us of how important it is for us as Christians to be obedient and faithful to God. When we do this, He will bless our work.

We also heard from Mark Bendorf as he shared how, even in his darkest moments of losing his son, he knew he was never alone as Jesus was by his side. Mark is a blessing to others as they go through challenges and losses in life.

Lastly, Barb and Tom Hoffner and Scott Haumersen were given the Faithful Servant Award by the National Christian Foundation Wisconsin in recognition of their consistently putting their faith into action in the Madison Area. It’s amazing to see the impact that the Madison Christian Giving Fund has had on Madison Area Ministries. To God be the glory.

Capacity Building Workshop on Fundraising

The Madison Christian Giving Fund is committed to investing in the success of our Ministry Partners. Surveys have confirmed that fundraising is a top priority topic for our Capacity Building Workshops. On October 7, 2022, about 40 people attended a 3-hour interactive learning session led by Marcy Heim, a fundraising professional with over 20 years of experience.

The participants learned that fundraising is about building relationships over time with people who have common interests and values. We learned that the number 1 reason people give is because they are asked! We learned there are many options to giving that benefit both the ministry and the giver. We learned that giving is a joy and asking is a privilege.

Marcy gave us many practical tools to enable us to be more comfortable and confident with the fundraising process. As the session closed, Tom Hoffner, one of the founders of the Madison Christian Giving Fund, shared how this all started with a gift of $50,000 in 2014. Since then, the FUND has raised and granted $956,000 to 61 Madison Christian organizations. When people apply what was learned at the Artful Ask workshop, the impact will be enormous.
